There are many varieties of holly, apart from the ubiquitous Ilex aquifolium 'J C van Tol’. This is popular, as it is has male and female flowers on the same plant, ensuring your supply of berries. Many hollies are dioecious, meaning the male and female flowers are on separate plants. If you only have a male plant, you will not get berries, however their flowers are often more attractive and sweetly scented. The naming confuses many, as the well known male (berryless) cultivar has a female title, Ilex aquifolium 'Golden Queen’ and the female berrying cultivar has been given a male title, Ilex aquifolium 'Golden King’.
